On February 23rd, The Malaysian police have arrested a gang of 9 men over the theft of Bitcoin mining machines. The group of thieves were stated to specialize in stealing Bitcoin machines and finally got caught when they tried to sell half a million dollars worth of expensive equipment online.
“We were acting on information obtained when the suspects attempted to sell the equipment via Mudah.my and Facebook. We managed to recover 58 Bitcoin machines worth more than RM500,000,”
Serdang OCPD Assistant Commissioner Megat Mohammad Aminudin Megat Alias states.
Similar theft reports have been made though out the Serdang area, which Alias believes were conducted by the same group arrested.
During the time frame between Jan 17th – Feb 16th, there had been 5 reports given to the police with a total of 153 mining machines and power supply units (PSU) reported stolen. The suspects are said to be between the ages of 20-40 and were arrested during 6 different raids. All suspects are said to have confessed to the thefts at the time of their arrest. The Malaysian police are currently still working on investigations as there is said to be the gang’s ringleader still on the run.
